We had a blast visiting Helene's Hilltop Orchard and learning about growing and harvesting pumpkins! We also went on a tractor and wagon ride to see the pumpkin fields and apple orchard. We all found our way through the corn maze. Everyone picked a pumpkin to take home at the end.

Second and third graders joined together to learn about fire prevention and safety. Local firefighters and EMTs brought a fire safety demonstration house and a real ambulance to our school to teach safety tips, and to give everyone a chance to practice safely escaping a "burning" house without panicking.
Fall means pumpkins, and we have been busy reading about pumpkins, learning about the life cycle of pumpkins, and doing some exploration of real pumpkins. We are looking forward to our upcoming field trip to a pumpkin patch too. In these photos you can see the students checking out the insides of a pumpkin before recording their observations in their pumpkin books. They also added soil and water to the pumpkin to see if the seeds will grow right out of the inside of it. If you look closely you can also see their latest art project behind them featuring kittens sitting in pumpkins.
The second graders studied a toad that visited our classroom for a day. They researched what kind it was and learned about its natural habitat. They measured it and looked closely at it with magnifying lenses. Nobody in this group is squeamish about slippery critters!
